This document presents a general overview on the basic and molecular techniques more commonly employed for the study of chromosomes in fishes, with examples that demonstrate the usefulness of cytogenetics to resolve taxonomic problems, particularly when meristic or morphometric characteristic do not result in a clear differentiation between species.
