Abstract

The Ceratopogonid midges are small sized insects commonly known in Venezuela as “jejenes”, and some species are vectors of pathogens such as viruses, protozoa and helminths of humans and animals. In this paper, a revised and updated checklist of the Ceratopogonidae family (Diptera, Nematocera) registered from Venezuela is shown. Until now, 142 midge species have been recorded, grouped into 16 genus (Alluaudomyia spp., Amerohelea spp., Atrichopogon spp., Bezzia spp., Clinohelea spp., Culicoides spp., Monohelea spp., Dasyhelea spp., Forcipomyia spp., Leptoconops spp., Mallochohelea spp., Pachyhelea spp., Parabezzia spp., Paryphoconus spp., Phaenobezzia spp., Stilobezzia spp.) forming 4 subfamilies (Ceratopogoninae, Dasyheleinae, Forcipomyiinae, Leptocopinae). Bio-ecological, medical, veterinary and agronomic relevance and research needs on the Venezuelan ceratopogonid midges, are discussed.
