Abstract

SALAZAR-LUGO, Raquel. Metabolism of iron, inflammation and obesity. Saber [online]. 2015, vol.27, n.1, pp.5-16. ISSN 1315-0162.

Iron is the metal that leads the redox metabolism of living beings. It plays a central role in the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and it is an essential cofactor of a large number of critical proteins that regulate all aspects of the body and cellular physiology. However, due to its chemical properties as redox active element it also plays a key role in the damage induced by reactive species of oxygen (RSOs) in tissues and during inflammatory processes. For this reason, the metal is strictly regulated by organisms. In this review, the most recent aspects related to iron metabolism and its impact on inflammatory processes are discussed, with emphasis on obesity, which is one of the most important epidemics to fight against worldwide.

Keywords : Hepcidin; iron regulatory protein; IRP.
