Cockroaches are recognized indoor pests carrying microrganisms of medical-zoonotic importance. In this study preliminary findings are provided on the identification of trofozoites and cysts of multiflagellate protozoa Lophomonas blattarum (Parabasalia: Hypermastigia, Cristomonadida: Lophomonadidae), causal agent of bronchopulmonary lophomoniasis, in gut and external body parts of nymphs and adults of the synanthropic cockroach Periplaneta americana (Insecta: Dyctioptera, Blattodea), collected from Coro University Hospital, Falcon state, Venezuela. The implications of these findings for public health are discussed.
