Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis and cyclosporiosis are important enteroparasitoses causing diarrheal disease, being potentially life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals. In this study, we present the preliminary findings on a clinical and epidemiological survey of intestinal coccidioses performed in 188 apparently immunocompetent inhabitans from the rural village El Hato, Paraguaná peninsula, Falcón state, Venezuela. Symptoms associated with intestinal coccidioses were determined by means of anamnesis and clinical examination. The parasitological diagnosis was made by employing Kinyoun staining. It should be highlighted that cough was observed in 14.36% (27/188) individuals, and was the only clinic manifestation significant and strongly associated with the infections due to Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium spp., being detected in 41.94% (26/62) of cyclosporiosis cases and in just 1.61% (1/62) of the negative ones [X2 = 57.19; Odds Ratio (OR) = 90.28 (12.32-1849.12), p < 0,001]; while cough was observed in 30% (15/50) of inhabitants with cryptosporidiosis, and in 24% (12/50) of the non infected ones [X2 = 13.54; p < 0,001; OR = 4.5 (1.79-11.42)]. The importance of these findings for public health are discussed.
