DEVERA, RODOLFO et al. TOXOCARIOSIS AND BRONCHIAL HYPERREACTIVITY IN CHILDREN FROM CIUDAD BOLÍVAR, BOLIVAR STATE, VENEZUELA . Saber [online]. 2016, vol.28, n.1, pp.177-180. ISSN 2343-6468.
Between May and September 2014, 62 children between 7 and 12 years of age attended in the pediatric emergency Hospital Universitario Ruiz y Páez of Ciudad Bolivar, Bolívar State, Venezuela, were evaluated to determine the prevalence of antibodies anti Toxocara canis and its possible relationship between bronchial hyperresponsiveness and seropositivity. From each participating child, after obtaining informed consent from the parents and filled a control file, a blood sample was taken by puncture of the cubital vein to apply the serological test (ELISA IgG, IgG RIDASCREEN® Toxocara 04/01/10 7 laboratories R-Biopharm). Two groups were formed: 1) cases: 31 children with bronchial hyperreactivity or diagnosed with asthma; 2) controls: 31 children that were treated at the pediatric emergency for other reasons. The prevalence of anti-T. canis antibodies in the population evaluated was 72.6% with no significant difference (χ2 = 0.73; df = 1; p = 0.39) between cases (67.7%) and controls (77.4%). In conclusion, although seropositivity was not increased in the group of cases, it is likely that some of them could be caused by T. canis.
