CASTELLANO-GONZALEZ, M et al. Bacteriological diagnosis of Gardnerella vaginalis from endocervical samples. Rev. Soc. Ven. Microbiol. [online]. 2001, vol.21, n.1, pp.12-16. ISSN 1315-2556.
Gardnerella vaginalis is associated with bacterial vaginosis; however, its rol as an etiological agent in this infection is a matter of controversy. In this study a total of 147 samples of endocervical secretion were processed. These samples were subjected to direct examination (wet mount and Gram stain) and were inoculated in H.B.A and C.A. (incubated in 5-10% CO2 at 35-37ºC for 24-48 hrs). Bacteriological identification was based on the appearance of clue celIs under direct examination, cellular and colonial morphology, diffuse betahemolysis, catalase, oxidase and hydrolysis of the hippurate; 61 samples (41,49%) were positive in the wet mount, 62 (42,17%) for Gram staining and 73 (49,66%) in the culture, showing positive results for G. vaginalis in 93,15% (66 strains) based on C.A. and 67,12% (49 strains) in H.B.A., thus, the use of both culture media is recommended in order to increase the possibility of isolating this microorganism.
