GINESTRE PEREZ, M et al. Gardnerella vaginalis and conventional uropathogens in out-patients. Rev. Soc. Ven. Microbiol. [online]. 2001, vol.21, n.2, pp.6-9. ISSN 1315-2556.

Urine samples of 1.370 patients with symptoms of urinary tract infection, who attended to the Clinical Laboratory of La Universidad del Zulia, (LUZ), during three years, were cultured to investigate Gardnerella vaginalis and conventional uropathogens. Significative quantities were obtained from 351 (25,62%) samples; 327 (93,18%) of which were positive for one microorganism. Bacteriuria for more than one microorganism in 24 (6,84%). The etiology frequency was: E. coli 198 (52,10%), G. vaginalis 67 (17,63%), P. mirabilis 29 (7,63%), K. pneumoniae 26 (6,64%), Ps. aeruginosa 14 (3,68%), other microorganisms 46 (12,10%). G. vaginalis, a nonconventional uropathogen, was obtained in the second place, G. vaginalis was obtained in count >105 UFC/ml urine in 37 (55,22%), 104-105 UFC/ml urine in 22 (32,83%), and 103-104 UFC/ml urine in 8 (11,95%). These results suggest that the presence of G. vaginalis in counts >104 reflex urinary infection. However, counts <104 require an evaluation of the patient to distinguish between colonization and infection.
