250 clinical histories were revised, from the Microbiological Service in the Central Hospital of Valera, corresponding to the years 1990-2000. This was to determine the number of patients infected with the virus AIDS, and their epidemiologic and evolution characteristics. The total number of patients infected in this period was 223. A total of 104 patients died. There was a progressive increase starting in 1996. The masculine dender was the most affected (80,71%). The most affected age group was between 30 to 39 years, in both sexes. The most popular transmission was sexual contact (89,68%), divided into heterosexual (52,43%), bisexual (20,62%) and homosexual (17,48%). Other mechanisms of transmission were perinatal (4,03%) use of intravenous drugs (0,89%) and transfusions (0,44%). At the moment of the diagnosis, the infected patients without symptoms represented 38,6%, meanwhile those with AIDS represented 60,1%.
