Thermophilic Campylobacter species are frequent causes of acute diarrhea in children around the world. In the present study, two important virulent factors in enteropathogens were evaluated. They were the adherence and invasion capacity of HEp-2 cells in different species of Campylobacter (C. jejuni subsp. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari) isolated as the only enteropathogen in children less than 5 years of age with inflammatory and secretory diarrhea. Moreover, isolated asymptomatic children were included. The results did not reveal a significant statistical difference in the adherence and invasion of those isolated in both groups of children (diarrhea and asymptomatic) or between those isolated from inflammatory and secretory diarrhea. The variation in clinical manifestations in these patients and the presence of asymptomatic carriers can be attributed to differences in the host; that is, active participation of the immune response or the type of strain involved, given that other virulent factors in these microorganisms has been described.
