ABSTRACT An important human pathogen is Vibrio cholerae, producing severe diarrhea (cholera) and other disorders. Is transmitted on contaminated food, especially seafood. In this investigation it was made phenotypic characterizations of 24 isolates of Vibrio sp. gotten by necropsy from isolates of Laboratorio de Bacteriología de Sanidad Animal-CENIAP-INIA in Maracay city, Aragua state, Venezuela; among which it was isolated Vibrio cholerae on lisas and tilapias. Bacterial identification technics are based upon phenotypical and metabolic characteristics; growth of colonies in culture media, microscopic morphology and dye reactivity, and biochemical characteristics based on use of substratum. On tilapia specimens studied it was identified not-O1 Vibrio cholerae and on lisas Vibrio parahaemolyticus and not-O1 Vibrio cholerae. An sanitary important discovery, as fish species studied are human-consumption food, which constitutes a public health issue.
