Nine soil samples from different climatic areas of Lara state, Venezuela, were studied to determine the population and distribution of Nocardia and the soil factors influencing their distribution. For this purpose, the paraffin bait technique and the Most Probable method were applied. In six of the studied samples, the population of Nocardia sp., oscillated between 0.9-17.5 organisms g-1 dry soil. We find out correlation only between the soil pH and the population of this microorganisms in some of the studied samples. The more frequently isolated species belong to the Nocardia asteroides complex. Although the paraffin bait method has been broadly used for the isolation of the Nocardia gender, it was not selective and its utility to quantify this microorganisms is limited.
