Two variants of Cryptococcus neoformans and 5 serotypes have been described: Cryptococcus neoformans var neoformans (serotype A, D y AD) are most likely to be isolated from patient specimens than Cryptococcus neoformans var neoformans serotype A, recovered in AIDS patients; Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii (serotypes B y C), have been exceptionally associated with AIDS patients. 43 Cryptococcus neoformans isolates were studied. Canavanine glycine bromothymol blue medium (CBG) has been shown to be a reliable medium to identify Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii 2 isolates (4.65%) of Cryptococcus neoformans var gattii, were isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid, one of a patient with diagnosis of idiopathic cellular and humural immunodeficiency, and the other of an AIDS patient. Epidemiological studies are limited in Venezuela and identifications of the fungus rarely include subspecies or serotype.
