The authors present an extensive overview on the genus Rhodococcus, a group of microorganisms that belong to the Actinomycetales family. The study reviews aspects related to the microbiology, cytochemistry, pathology, clinic and therapy of the affections caused by these microorganisms as pathogenic agents, particularly, in their role as producers of nosocomial and opportunistic infections. At the same time, aspects concerning to the importance of these microorganisms in the environment and as useful agents to the environmental remediation are also reviewed.
