Abstract

Ajoene is a secure and effective agent in chromomycosis and some dermatophytosis treatments; it has shown its activity on Microsporum canis isolates, being a potential drug for topical treatment of tinea capitis. We consider outstanding to determine in vitro susceptibility to ajoene, terbinafine and griseofulvin of six Microsporum canis isolated of patients with this disease, following the guidelines of NCCLS M38-A for molds, with some modifications. The ajoene MIC range were 30-204µM and the IC50 values oscillated among 1,45-2,96 µM; terbinafine MIC and IC50values were among 10-30 µM and 0,02-0,12 µM; griseofulvin MIC and IC50 values were among 10-30µM and 1,08-3,91µM (0,38-1,38µg/ml) respectively. M. canis shows a dose-dependent susceptibility to ajoene, being able to constitute an efficient alternative for tinea capitis treatment.
