Abstract The capacity of adherence and citotoxicity of K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca upon cell lines HT/29 and CaCo-2. was tested in diarreic stools samples from 0-5 years old children whose main characteristics were poverty and malnutrition, which represent two of the most important public health problems in Venezuela. From six strains stadied, five were adherent and citotoxic for both lines. These results confirm that the strains of K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca showed two enteropathogenicity mechanisms: one of specific adherence and another of citotoxicity to the HT-29 and CaCo-2 cell lines
