Abstract

FERRARA, Giuseppe; PANIZO, María Mercedes; COLMENARES, Luis  and  RODRIGUEZ-ADRIAN, Libsen. Rhinosinusal mucormycosis by Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a leukemic patient: Case report. Rev. Soc. Ven. Microbiol. [online]. 2017, vol.37, n.2, pp.71-74. ISSN 1315-2556.

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is an unusual opportunistic pathogen which belongs to the order of the Mucorales and causes infection in immunosuppressed patients, particularly with malignant hematological diseases. We report a case of rhinosinusal mucormycosis caused by C. bertholletiae in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia. The critical factors for optimal medical management of mucormycosis are early diagnosis, reversal of predisposing factors, surgical debridement, and appropriate early antifungal therapy. However, the success of the intervention could be threatened by the delicate balance of the immune system of immunocompromised patients.

Keywords : rhinosinusal mucormycosis; Cunninghamella bertholletiae; acute myeloid leukemia.
