This is the first of two papers devoted to the historical comprehension of educational reform promoted by Martin Luther in early 16^th century Germany. After showing some preliminary connections between Luther’s thoughts and the crisis of the medieval order, Luther’s educational ideas are treated in detail. First, the nature of the educational issue as seen by Luther is explained, and why it seemed to demand closer attention. Secondly, Luther’s proposals for educational reform are presented as a response to the wider problems confronted by him at that time.
