The development of new technologies of information and communication (TIC), obliges us to rethink the "society of information" and its challenges. Herein, the nature of this kind of society is determined, the guiding principles that should prevail in the same are explained, and what occurred in the first phase of the world-wide meeting on the information society is described, indicating the perspectives for the second phase, and making reflections as to the role of an interconnected society. The conclusion is that in this type of society an opportunity exists for the consolidation of social equality and integrity.
