Abstract

CAMPO-REDONDO, María Susana  and  GABRIEL ANDRADE, Jesús Andrade. Matricentrality in the Venezuelan Family from a Historical Perspective. Frónesis [online]. 2007, vol.14, n.2, pp.86-113. ISSN 1315-6268.

This article presents a general view of the Venezuelan family. In accord with authors such as Alejandro Moreno and José Luis Verthencourt, it holds that the Venezuelan family is ‘matricentric.’ The article also explains some of the historical reasons why the Venezuelan family takes this peculiar structure. It concludes that the matricentric family model will continue to exist in Venezuela and the best way to cope with this reality is by offering women wider spaces for social participation, thus breaking the vicious circle between poverty and the matricentric family.

Keywords : Matricentric family; Venezuelan family; history; woman; social participation.
