Resumen

RODRIGUEZ, Isabel  y  GOVEA, Héctor. The Discourse on Sustainable Development in Latin America. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.2, pp.37-63. ISSN 20030507.

This article examines the different conceptions of sustainable development and the problem of their political viability, taking into account that their implementation depends on the intervention of political actors capable of interpreting them and creating the appropriate political conditions. A review of the relevant literature suggests a) that there is a proliferation of focuses that have become fashionable; b) that the necessary conceptual coherence has not been achieved; c) that ideological preconceptions and deterministic postures are all too common; d) that they need to take into account the dynamics of public agenda construction. Nevertheless, the authors suggest that, despite the difficulties they identify, the incorporation into the public agenda of policies geared towards sustainable development could produce important results and stem the most damaging impacts of globalization.
