Resumen
BRIE, Michel. Crisis of Hegemony in the Latin American Left. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.2, pp.137-146. ISSN 20030507.
This text is organized in four sections. The first analyzes the crisis of the neoliberal model in Latin America and how this crisis affected the Left. The central problem is that, while in recent decades the Left has been defined in terms of a struggle against neoliberalism, governments elected by the Left have not offered an alternative, as in the cases of Lula and Tabaré Vázquez. The second section offers a brief overview of the history of the Left under the impact of neoliberalism. Then the author attempts to locate this experience within the wider historical context of the struggle of the Left against capitalism. Finally, the article examines the current crisis in the Left as ideological, political and of identification with its natural social base and offers suggestions as to the requirements for the construction of a post-neoliberal hegemonic project.
