Abstract During the 18th and 19th centuries, masculine supremacy was manifest in all aspects of Venezuelan social life. It was sanctioned by the laws and norms established by the Church and the State, centers of power charged with the preservation of the established order and the vigilance and control of the everyday behavior of men and women. This situation is clearly reflected in the discourse which emerges from the documents over marital conflicts, which the author examines with a view to establishing the respective gender roles within marriage and, in particular, how these were reflected in the dominant ideology
