The objective of this article is to examine some aspects of recent Venezuelan experience in the struggle against poverty, within the context of a new normative, institutional and socio-political framework, very different from that of the nineteen nineties. It analyzes the so-called "social missions" developed during the Chávez administration, as mechanisms designed to create political and social identities within a context in which the political actors require a new basis for legitimacy and political control.
