Resumen
BORGUCCI, Emmanuel. Concentration and Intermediation in the Venezuelan Banking System Between 1993 and 2004. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp.07-09. ISSN 20030507.
In this article, the author analyzes the behavior of the banking concentration index in loans, deposits and equity between 1993 and 2004 on the basis of the Pearson Banking Concentration Coefficient and compares the information with an Intermediation Index, specifically the Herfidahl-Hirshman Index. The results indicate that between 1993 and 2004 the concentration level in loans, deposits and equity is moderate; furthermore, the correlation in quantity of universal and commercial banks and the concentration in loans, deposits, and equity is low and negative; and the financial intermediation declines after 1997. The conclusion is that a moderately concentrated banking market and low levels of financial intermediation, are the result of the attractiveness of investing in open market operations, specially with publics bonds, instead of recurring to bank loans, the existence of banking innovations and the financial intermediation of the government as a lender, by way of banks and other national credit institutions.
