SONSIRE LOPEZ, María; CANINO, María Victoria y VESSURI, Hebe. The Oil "Opening": A Press-Constructed Discourse. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp.117-142. ISSN 20030507.
In political communication, the newspaper is considered a mediator between society and its leaders, with a special capacity for influencing public opinion. This undoubtedly takes on an even greater significance when we refer to the treatment of information about the oil industry, which sustains the national economy and is considered of strategic importance in world geopolitics. This article presents an analysis of the oil "opening" from a communicational perspective, as reflected in the coverage of the dailies El Nacional and Últimas Noticias during 1997, 1999 and 2001. An analysis is made of the discourse constructed by the newspapers under study with a view to creating a particular image of the issues involved and a positive valuation of the oil "opening".
