NIETO VALERY, Herman; SANCHEZ-ROSE, Isabelle y VESSURI, Hebe. Patients and Experts in the Search for Treatment: Antirretroviral Drugs in Venezuela and the Complexity of VIH. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp.143-167. ISSN 20030507.
The paper presents one of the most interesting facets of HIV/AIDS: retroviral treatments and patient participation. We first describe the problem in a general fashion: the scope and consequences of the epidemics, prevention and cure, and human rights, among other factors. Besides the theoretical revision and the general analysis of the situation, the article is based on a case study realized by way of interviews with several of the actors involved, with a view to understanding the process by which Venezuelans who live with AIDS have achieved free and non-discriminatory access to antiretroviral medicines, as well as broadening their participation in the treatment of their own cases, and in the research on the disease.
