This article analyzes the mechanisms which operate in the selection of judges in Venezuela, from 1961 to the present. The author examines both the relevant norms which are apparently in force, and the mechanisms which effectively prevail. His conclusion is that throughout the period studied the selection of judges has not sought the appointment of the most qualified, but rather guarantee a political control of the judicial system.
