Resumen

BIARDEAU R, Javier. From “The Tree with Three Roots” to “21st-century Bolivarian socialism”: A New Ideological Narrative of Emancipation?. Revista Venezolana de Economía y Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.1, pp.57-113. ISSN 20030507.

This article broaches the relationship between the ‘ideological narrative’ of the Bolivarian revolution and the construction of hegemonies and counter-hegemonies in Venezuela. This ideological narrative of emancipation articulates the notions of ‘genuine roots’, `general will’ and the search for the ‘common good’, in the building of a projected hegemony. The author adopts the contribution of the theory of discourse in order to analyze ‘revolutionary populisms’ in Latin America and, in particular, in Venezuela. Moments of inflexion in Chávez’s discourse are identified and special attention is given to the emphasis on the ‘leader’ from 2004 on, in redefining the scope of the project, its rhythms and its priorities in the transformation towards a ‘21st-century Bolivarian socialism’`. At the same time, the article underlines the difficulties encountered when attempting to overcome the legacy of the bureaucratic-despotic socialist models.
