IRANZO, Consuelo e RICHTER, Jacqueline. Subcontracting and Conflict: The Case of the Orinoco Iron and Steel Company. Gaceta Laboral [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.1, pp.5-34. ISSN 1315-8597.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the effects of labor sub-contracting on the labor relations dynamic at the Orinoco Iron and Steel Company (Sidor), where this practice has existed since before its privatization, contrary to what some believe. In recent years, denunciations of the precarious situation experienced by those who are subcontracted have played an increasingly relevant role in company worker-employer conflicts, conflicts fostered either by the contracted labor unions or by Sidor itself. This work takes a special interest in studying the year 2006, which was particularly intense in terms of confrontations and whose analysis will serve to reveal, as a paradigmatic example, the social and economic implications that the labor subcontracting phenomenon as well as the absence of social dialog among the actors and inside the union movement itself may have.
