The transfer of the Portuguese king to Brazil, fleeing harassment of Napoleon in Europe, was decisive for the emergence of the feeling of nationality in this South American country, linked to the territorial possession of the Empire. The permanence of Joao VI in Rio de Janeiro for thirteen years, allowed the strengthening of the colonial state acted as the legal frame of reference to maintain the territorial unity of almost half the South American area. These achievements were conditions for the formation of Brazil as a country of the future.
