In spite of the contribution of Doctrina Betancourt to the legitimation and projection of the democratic image of Venezuela between 1958 and 1998, at the same time it has been criticized by some analysts due to its little effectiveness like disuasor means of coup d'etats in the continent between 1959 and 1964, to its isolationist effects and their partially interventionist character. The objective of the present article consists of determining if the design and putting in practice of the call Betancourt Doctrine, responded to elements of realism or political principismo. In other words, which we tried to explain with this work is if this instrument of the Venezuelan foreign policy destined to the promotion and the defense of the democracy in the region, obeyed to the political pragmatism of our government or on the contrary it had plus a normative or ethicalpolitical character.
