The national delegate is an unknown official in the Venezuelan historiography. Nevertheless, it had a significant presence in the last three decades of the 19th century as a representative of the political and military central power over the regions. Th is article shows how this figure emerged under the policies of consolidation of the Nation-State, especially in the first years of Antonio Guzmán Blanco´s government. We locate the regional contexts of political instability that resulted in the designation of the first national delegates in the States of Zulia, Guzmán and Nueva Esparta, without ignoring other key officials of the Guzmancista strategy to control power, such as: the appointment of provisional presidents to control elections in difficult circumstances due to armed unrest, as in the cases of Barcelona and Barquisimeto.
