Th is essay is a historical study of the exogamic unions and marriages that took place in the Curaçao Jewish community and its satellite Caribbean communities. Our analysis take up both the anthropological and historical facets of this topic. Our thesis is that the Curaçaoan Sephardic communities, both on the island and its satellite communities, was torn by the tensions resulting from the coexistence with larger demographic groups. Literature, such as the novel Josefina displays elements of this particular Caribbean historical reality. At the same time the novel mirror a universal dilemma for Jewish survival. In the Caribbean case it is difficult to point to a single cause as the trigger of exogamous processes. Th e literature is rigid and insuffi cient to illuminate this issue. Historical sources indicate that exogamy was prevalent in the Caribbean basin and resulted in thousands of descendants of Sephardim.
