In 1808 the Spanish monarchy crisis which began with the mutiny of Aranjuez, where Carlos IV is forced to abdicate in favor of his son Ferdinand VII occurs. These events forced Napoleon Bonaparte Emperor of the French to act as a judge on succession. Kings are moved to the city of Bayona where they are forced to abdicate in favor of the emperor, who eventually placed Joseph Bonaparte, brother as king of Spain. Of note is the infl uence of Prime Minister Manuel Godoy, in demonstrations of these facts. Godoy was a very active politically and premier pro French tendencies which earned him the hatred of the Spanish population and especially Fernando VII.
