RODRIGUEZ M, Adelina. The collapse of The Callao: the crisis of the aurifera production in Guyana at the end of the 19th century. Tiempo y Espacio [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.62, pp.187-202. ISSN 1315-9496.
1870, announced the founding of El Callao mining company, the press of the time noted in big headlines was one of the most significant given the magnitude and quality of reefs that formed it. The news about the production of the mine and its main shareholder and Chairman, don Antonio Liccioni occupied the top headlines of the local and national press. Indeed, for the first time in Venezuelan economic history gold industry stood at the first places of production. The gold rush that had generated the high production rate registered by the mine of El Callao acted like a powerful magnet, producing, therefore a strong attraction to the El Callao District, effect that focused on the tendency of the population to be concentrated in the mining area, then considered a new California to the gold diggers who aspired to the discovery of new Callao. However, the increasing rate of production began recording at very short notice warning signs, and for 1887 is proclaimed in the ballrooms and headlines about the decline of the production of Callao and the imminent closure of the Company. The deep crisis registered with the progressive decline of El Callao mine, and the subsequent fall in gold prices, regional and national level, is the central subject of this essay.
