The existence of important deposits of salt of excellent quality in Araya’s region, attracted to his coasts from 1599 the Dutches, those who started exploiting them in their benefit, putting with it in danger the effective domain that Spain had on these lands, preventing the commercial activities of the region, and facing militarily, to both nations what historically it is known as The First Battle of the Salt, and which ended in Araya with the Spanish victory in the Naval Battle of the Port of Cove of Aff rays in 1605. Nevertheless, the same one was not definitive, and later, during the War of Thirty Years, Spain and Holland become absorbed in The Second Battle of the Salt, which has as scenes: Araya, from 1621 to 1623, when the presence of the castle removes permanently the Dutches; The Tortoise island, from 1627 to 1638, when Benito Arias Montalvo after defeating and to throw the Dutches for the force, floods the salt mine rendering useless it; and the river mouth of the river Unare, from 1633 to 1640, when Don Juan de Orpín, after expelling them from the fort that they constructed there, sinks the salt mine with sweet water, destroying it, together with all others that existed in the region, with what he put end definitively to the presence of Holland in the Venezuelan salt mines, until in the Peace of Westphalia or Munster of 1648, it was agreed formally between both nations, to avoid this activity in the Earth of Grace.
