Resumen

DEL B., María C. Viana. Hydrometeorology in the engine without navigation basin Orinoco growing and currents. Tiempo y Espacio [online]. 2015, vol.25, n.64, pp.212-242. ISSN 1315-9496.

From a transport perspective, the Orinoco River acts as an arterial road that penetrates Venezuela linking the Plains region (Llanos) and Guayana. Its tributaries also connect the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of the Conquest, it was used to create settlements, to pacify regions, to transport goods and people, and in the quest for the legendary El Dorado. Nowadays it is the principal mode of transport for the output of the Guayana Heavy Industries. River navigation, especially of unpowered boats, depends on the hydrometereological regime of the basin of the river.  In 1918  records with systematic measurement of the variables of that regime were created at Ciudad Bolivar. Prior to this, the information source for  the effects of the fluctuation of these variables on  navigability  was the stories of travelers and chroniclers. In this work, we study these stories, and present records variations on increasing river flows and currents in the basin of the Orinoco, and their influence on sailing unpowered boats.

Palabras clave : Orinoco; navigability; hydrometeorology; streamflow; currents.
