Resumen

GUIA CARIPE, Germán José. Coal and iron: maritime force that consolidates the Navy during guzmancista regeneration (1873-1876). Tiempo y Espacio [online]. 2015, vol.25, n.64, pp.351-382. ISSN 1315-9496.

During Guzman Blanco’s “Septenio”, a series of policy changes and reforms in the military structure were made in order to achieve peace in the country. However, to achieve this purpose, it was convenient: renew the existing sail warships; improve naval stations; create a nautical school; implement a shipyard’s project including a dock in Puerto Cabello; build port captaincies and lighthouses; dredging the Maracaibo bar; constitute a port police; among other changes that would benefi t the sea, river and lake navigation. In this sense, the acquisition of armed steamships was not only necessary but also timely to dominate and defend a broad spectrum of possible invasions to the coasts, ports blockades , weapons smuggling into enemy positions and the mobilization of ground troops at high speed to repel opposing forces that threaten to undermine the peace project established, however, the greatest contribution during regeneration of Guzman Blanco (1873-1876), was the incorporation of coal and iron to the consolidation of Navy, which marked a milestone in the Venezuelan Naval History.
