BANKO, Catalina. A shelter in Venezuela: the immigrants from Hungria, Croacia, Eslovenia, Rumania and Bulgaria. Tiempo y Espacio [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.65, pp.63-75. ISSN 1315-9496.
At the conclusion of the Second World War, crowds of fugitives were trying to leave the European territory and seek new horizons in the Americas. In February 1947, Venezuela signed a joint statement in London with the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees, belonging to the United Nations, for the reception of immigrants. From June of that year important contingents of refugees began arriving in Venezuela. So far, most of the studies have been directed to examine the presence of Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese people, who constituted the highest proportion of immigrants in the country. In order to examine a facet of immigration scarcely studied, this article focuses on researching the insertion process of a minority of refugees from Eastern Europe, especially Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria, who have played a prominent role in the business and professional field.
