GUIA CARIPE, Germán. Coastal artillery striped in Venezuela: technological innovation in guzmancist regeneration (1875-1876). Tiempo y Espacio [online]. 2017, vol.27, n.67, pp.63-111. ISSN 1315-9496.
The objective of this section is to investigate the reinforcement of coastal defense, through the acquisition of striped artillery during the Guzmancist regeneration of 1875 and 1876, from primary sources from the Venezuelan archives of the period. These sources have led to a number of conclusions, including the following: first, the Industrial Revolution came to transform the scope and annihilation capacity of striped artillery and tactical organization and attempts to professionalize the fixed striped coastal artillery. Second, the strategic importance of the coastal littoral to face a foreign invasion (threats from Holland), reason why the intensity of the realized effort was smaller than in the rest of the islands. Third, the reinforcement of the defenses was driven by the personal aspiration of Guzmán Blanco, for having a "strong army" and limited by improvisation in the use of modern weaponry. Finally, this effort concluded in 1877, without having completed the defensive needs of the fortifications of Puerto Cabello and La Guaira.
