This paper centers attention on the problem of the integration of actors in the research and extension process in higher education, and especially in Venezuelan universities. It is based on documentary review, discussion of key concepts and theoretical focuses related to the challenges to higher education, research tendencies in universities, the scientific formation of students, and university extension related to research. The conclusion is a body of proposals and recommendations in order to empower the integration of the actors in this process based on the development of a research culture, the incorporation of research in university curriculum, and the promotion of research groups or networks among other aspects.
