MELENDEZ-FERRER, Luis E. Social, Professional and Institutional Conditions of University Professors. Revista de Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.1, pp.139-157. ISSN 1315-9518.
The study of university teachers implies considering the social, professional and institutional conditions (SPIC) which surround the teacher reality. A characterization of the SPIC which determines the human, academic and spatial aspects of the LUZ- Engineering teacher is pursued. In order to understand it, the professor model is discussed, alternative professional formation, the relationship university-enterprise as well as the internal-external condition in regard to a professors life. SPIC refers to the last title obtained, area of specialization, schools, professorial categories and years of service rendered. When undertaking research about the teaching attitudes of professors, we use technical-empirical elements which generate a reflection, confronting the ideal with the reality of such conditions. The last degree obtained, and the development of significant research experience empowers the professors´ position within the university community, as well as the areas of specialization, the condition, the encounter with a theoretical-methodological episteme, and the pursuit of the be-do essence of a high quality professor. The schools are psychological, scientific and physical spaces that determine the communitarian character of an area of knowledge. The professorial category is an organizational system that conditions the status, but not the scientific-pedagogical knowledge of the professor. The years of service are the time-labor perspective for determining outstanding behavior exposure, expertise, processes, productions and formative-organizational values of teacher.
