The objective of this article to analyze environmental responsibility as an opportunity to create value in organizations, understanding that this allows for cementing the foundations of sustainable development. Environmental responsibility is equally considered an element capable of diminishing costs occasioned by risks and increasing "market share" through innovation. To achieve this objective, theory contrasting was used, which explained how environmental responsibility can generate added value in organizations based on considerations such as environmental ethics, legitimacy and sustainable development. Conclusions were that through their socio-environmental efforts, companies can obtain benefits as they improve the capital of their reputation
