This paper aims at presenting a general description of inflation targeting, particularly related to its definition, first conditions, advantages and disadvantages, through a resultant assessment. A bibliographical review of the theoretical aspects of inflation targeting and an analysis of the different studies of application in countries with developed, emergent and transitional economies is performed, in order to obtain evidence that may support not only the importance of fulfilling the initial conditions, but also the advantages of adopting this monetary strategy. As for the disadvantages, due to events occurred in those economies, some recommendations are proposed in order to adjust the monetary policy in the best possible way.
