The purpose of this research is to characterize the extension policy at the University of Zulia (UZ) from 1995 to 2006. To accomplish this, a review of literature specialized in extension was made, as was a search for empirical information from official documents; additionally, a set of interviews was made with key informants from the extension administration at UZ during the period under study. Results show a similitude between the official concept of extension at UZ and the concept assumed in this paper. During the period under study, various initiatives have been taken that tend toward constructing an extension policy, favoring activities to foment extension among academic personnel. Conclusions are that even though there are attempts to adapt the LUZ extension policy to guidelines offered by the Venezuelan state, institutional actions that remain outside these guidelines still persist.
