The objective of this article is to compare the behavior of economic return in the Venezuelan commercial and universal banks before and after the fusion processes over the period 1995-1999. In order to do this a descriptive study was undertaken. The methodology applied consisted in the analysis of documentary material issued by the Bank Superintendence. The results obtained indicate the following: Utility and financial incomes have been less on the average that before the fusions, and the financial margins increased slightly. The conclusion is that economic return in commercial and universal banks has not increased significantly the incomes generated by the banks
