The importance of Small and Medium Enterprises has created a series of investigations to identify factors that determine competitiveness. This article aims to analyze the relationship between competitive success and fours factors related to the internal environment of the Small Business (human resources, strategic planning, innovation, technology and quality certification), using a sample of 405 Mexican companies. Methodology was based on a review of previous studies and the scenario approach, fieldwork and data analysis, identification of the findings and conclusions. The results show significant positive values in the variables of innovation, technology and strategic planning. The contribution of this study is empirical verification regarding competitiveness determinants in the Mexican context. Conclusions are that highly competitive small businesses are those that innovate in their products, processes and management, have a higher technological level and a strategic plan.
