Abstract

MARTINEZ C, Hugo R  and  PEROZO S, Beatriz J. Managerial Information System for Optimizing Investment Portfolios . Revista Venezolana de Gerencia [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.50, pp.253-272. ISSN 1315-9984.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of management information systems (MIS) for optimizing investment portfolios handled by brokerage firms for securities on the Bolsa de Valores de Caracas (BVC) (Caracas Stock Exchange, CSE). To this end, the management information system and its importance in the strategic planning of organizations are studied. The theory of investment portfolios and investment strategies for forming investment portfolios of securities are examined. The study investigates the CSE and securities trading with its members. The presence of a management information system for administering investment portfolios in securities transactions applied by securities brokerage firms was diagnosed. Competitive relevance of the management information system as a tool for optimizing investment portfolios in securities brokerage companies was determined. The research conducted was descriptive and its research design was non-experimental and trans-sectional. The hypothetical deductive method was used. Research results indicate that the CSE has 63 active members; only 6 (6%) handle the MISs, while 59 (91%) operate manually. Conclusions indicate that more than half the brokerage firms are downplaying the MISs, despite the competitive advantages represented in portfolio management quality.

Keywords : Management information system; investment portfolios; securities brokerage houses; Bolsa de Valores de Caracas; Caracas Stock Exchange.
