Some of the reasons to carry out scientific research at the Venezuelan universities are analyzed. Emphasis is made on the importance of doing research not only to generate highly qualified human resources but also to stimulate creativity, curiosity and innovation in them. Grounds for the holistic development of the country are thus established. For this reason, in this article, emphasis is made on the need to enhance the relation between science and technology organizations and universities regarding the basis of applied research and technology. Some alternatives to cope with one the biggest national problems, the lack of inter-institutional cooperation as a means for information exchange and national improvement, are mentioned. Finally, the influence of research activities on current culture as well as its importance in the evaluation or assessment of the universities are also stressed.
